What the Bible says
About Our Responsibility

(Prepared by Aaron Kember)

We are commanded to repent.

"And the times of this ignorance God overlooked; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:"
(Acts 17:30)

We are not to trust in our own righteousness.

"And he spoke this parable to certain who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes to heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified [rather] than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted."
(Luke 18:9-14)

We will not be justified by our works.

"Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we may be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified."
(Galatians 2:16)

"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not by works, lest any man should boast."
(Ephesians 2:8-9)

We are to put faith in the one that justifies the ungodly.

"But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness."
(Romans 4:5)

God's requirment of us is that we believe in His Son.

"Then said they to him, What shall we do, that we may work the works of God? Jesus answered and said to them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent."
(John 6:28,29)

Those who accept the Lord Jesus become the children of God.

"But as many as received him, to them he gave power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:"
(John 1:12)

Those who neglect God's way of salvation will find no way of escape.

"How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by them that heard him;"
(Hebrews 2:3)

"For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first beginneth with us, what shall be the end of them that obey not the gospel of God?"
(1 Peter 4:17)

There is no condemnation to those who are "in Christ Jesus."

"There is therefore now no condemnation to them who are in Christ Jesus, who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit."
(Romans 8:1)

"But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
